What is “Peak Cluster”?
Peak Cluster is a plan to capture the carbon dioxide (CO₂) generated during the manufacture of cement and lime in the Peak District. This CO₂ would be transported by pipeline for permanent storage beneath the seabed in the Irish Sea. The scheme would be a major national engineering project, decided through a Development Consent Order rather than ordinary local planning.

Present plans for Peak Cluster indicate the pipeline would pass very close to Whaley Bridge. Although the route is not finalised, published “scoping zones” show roughly where the corridor could run through the Upper Goyt valley and surrounding settlements.
Explore the route corridorHow will the project impact Whaley Bridge?
If the pipeline goes ahead it may have a major impact on Whaley Bridge. During construction, significant disruption might be expected — working corridors, HGV traffic, noise and restricted hours. Once operational, the safety of a dense-phase CO₂ pipeline should be subject to close scrutiny.
Construction and safetyEnvironmental effects on Whaley Bridge and the local area
The Whaley Bridge area is rich in beautiful landscapes, precious ecosystems and archaeological sites. There are many questions about the impact of a major construction project on habitats, watercourses, farmland and the setting of the Peak District National Park.
